Mod 2 Test Session & Module 2 Motorcycle Test

Explanation of your Mod 2 Test Session & Module 2 Motorcycle Test course

This course is the final step to gaining a full licence, and follows on from the Mod 2 Training Session (which you must have done to take this course). It is entirely road based and acts as a warm up prior to taking the Module 2 Test. Your instructor will make sure that you have everything ready to take the test, and then you will ride to and around the test centre. The Module 2 test takes about 45 minutes, after which you will conclude the session by riding back to base. You must make sure you bring all your documents and suitable clothes.

The session is 3.5 hours and costs £224.00 including bike hire and test fees. There is a maximum ratio of two students to one instructor.

In order to take the Module 2 Motorcycle Test you will need to have a valid CBT certificate, Motorcycle Theory Test certificate and Module 1 pass certificate.

Explanation of your Module 2 Motorcycle Test

The Module 2 Motorcycle Test consists entirely of riding on the road being followed by a DVSA examiner and lasts around 35 minutes. 10 minutes of the test involves riding independently – for example, following road signs to a specific destination.  Note – the independent ride element is designed for you to demonstrate your multi-tasking abilities, riding safely whilst reading road signs and markings. It doesn’t, however, matter if you were to ride a different way as long as you ride safely in a way that other road users can reasonably understand.

In order to take a Module 2 Test you will need to have a valid CBT certificate, Motorcycle Theory Test certificate and Module 1 pass certificate.

Your eyesight will be checked – the examiner will require you to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate; 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate. This will be from a set distance from a parked car or a number plate fixed on a wall. New-style number plates start with two letters followed by two numbers, eg AB12 ABC.

You will be asked some Motorcycle Test questions at the beginning of the test. These are colloquially known as the ‘show me/tell me’ questions, plus a question about carrying a pillion passenger. The questions are all available on our website here.

If during the test you think that you have messed things up, don’t panic but continue riding as the examiner asks you to. If you are deemed to have committed a serious fault the examiner will probably not tell you but instead you will be allowed to continue the test in order to get the full experience. If the examiner deems you to have committed a dangerous fault then the test will end at that point and you will be expected to telephone the office so that an instructor can ride out to collect you and escort you back. This is an extremely rare occurrence.

During the test rider faults can be accrued for minor mistakes – such as missing an observation – more than 10 rider faults mean that you will not pass. If you accumulate several of them of the same type (but fewer than 10) then you still may not pass, especially if these represent a systemic fault.

Normally we would recommend allowing at least 3 clear working days between taking your Module 1 test and your Module 2 Test. This is because, if you should fail your Module 1 Test then you need 3 working days’ notice to cancel or rearrange your Module 2 Test or you will have to pay for the Module 2 Test in full again.

If you fail your Module 2 Test then you will have to wait 10 working days before you can take the test again. Please bear in mind that all the certificates (CBT, Theory and Module 1) have varying life spans and they must all be valid for you to be able to take the test

Things to bring with you:

  • Your photocard UK driving licence.
  • Your CBT certificate.
  • Your Theory Test pass certificate
  • Your Module 1 test pass certificate
  • Suitable clothing for riding a motorcycle: hard-wearing jeans (not thin cotton trousers, tracksuit bottoms or leggings); sturdy footwear (not flimsy plimsolls or lightweight fashion shoes) – ideally which provide some ankle protection, such as work boots, strong walking boots or similar; glasses or contact lenses if needed.
  • Remember that you are going to be outside – so consider wearing layers if it is going to be cold.
  • You are welcome to bring your own riding gear, although we can provide jackets, helmets, gloves, waterproof trousers and hi-viz bibs
