Novice Light A1 Licence Course
This course is suitable for a novice rider with no previous experience (Novice)
If you haven’t already taken the Theory Test, then the course will start with an hour to take this at a DVSA Theory Test Centre.
The first day will be the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course done on a geared 125cc motorcycle or scooter. This wants to be done about one week before the start of the other four days. Should you need further training for your CBT, you will have time to complete it without interfering with the rest of your course. Often this is the hardest day of the course.
The second day of training is called a Roadrider. This is a fully structured course that covers all the elements of the road giving you all the practical experience of dealing with hill starts, roundabouts, junctions, one-way streets etc., in considerably more detail than the CBT. The idea is to give plenty of time riding a geared motorcycle or scooter while learning the road craft.
The third day is Mod Skills Day 1 where you will go through all the training required for the Module 1 Motorcycle Test. A considerable amount of this day will be in the training area. The morning is spent covering the slow manoeuvres; slalom, figure of eight, U-turn, slow ride and pushing & parking. There is normally time for a couple of hours of road riding, followed by the faster exercises: controlled stop, emergency stop and avoidance (swerve).
The fourth day, Mod Skills Day 2, has a small amount of time in the morning to warm up for the Module 1 Motorcycle Test which will be done mid-morning. This takes about 15 minutes. The remainder of the day is preparing you for the Module 2 Motorcycle Test and is therefore spent riding on the road. Topics like the Show Me/Tell Me questions and Independent Ride will be covered.
The final day – Mod Skills Day 3 is spent entirely on the road and is the final preparation prior to taking your Module 2 Motorcycle Test. The Module 2 Test is usually taken the following morning with an hour warm up beforehand. All being well you will hold a full motorcycle or scooter licence up to 125cc at the end of this.
